ABOUT THE SERIES: Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) is widely considered the
greatest Baroque sculptor. In
St. Peters
, in
Rome
he alone created the
main altar The Cathedra Petri,
over the high altar the Baldachino,
and the statue of St. Longinus
at the crossing. He
created on commission works for 9 Cardinals, 8 Popes and 2 Kings.
Moving in chronological order Prof. Steen will put the 17th
Century Baroque sculptor into historical context by addressing the
artist's work, techniques, influences, style, life, historical
significance and importantly the idea of spirituality in art.
Students will have a rare opportunity to
examine his work in person because the class coincides with
North America
's first major
Bernini exhibition, which will be at the
Getty
Museum
. In addition
to the class room lectures, Professor Steen will provide insightful
commentary as he leads the class through the exhibit.
With major loans from Italian museums, it is also the
first-ever comprehensive exhibit of Bernini's portrait busts.
Bernini was an extraordinary portrait artist who captured the
essence of his subjects with passion, dazzling virtuosity and
psychological insight. He had the unprecedented ability to
breathe life into the marble, shaping it in a dynamic way that
expressed both a physical likeness and also the living presence of
each individual. One of the show's most anticipated works is the bust
of Constanza Bonarelli, Bernini's mistress and the historical incident
where the face of Bernini’s brother is said to have been slashed in
a jealous rage over Constanza, causing the Pope to intervene.
The Getty exhibit goes on to include Bernini's portrait drawings, as
well as portrait busts by other sculptors from 17th-century
Rome
.Learn
about your Catholic spiritual heritage by discovering how it existed
in art in the 17th century!
THE SERIES FORMAT:
The
series will present the works of the artists in chronological order
and will include information about their work, techniques, influences,
style, and life and their significance for the history of Venetian
Art. Further information
about characteristic of the period as well as a cast of characters
will be included. This
series will include the state of the research on this topic at this
time in history. The
current facts as known not how the facts were acquired will be the
focus. Works in local
public collections will be highlighted.
NOTE: This
series is complete unto itself and not having been part of prior
series on the art of the Italian Renaissance including Mannerism
will not cause participants any disadvantages
